Ethics Station

Ethics, professionalism and governance is assessed for up to five minutes within the first station, alongside the portfolio areas rather than as a station of its own.

Format and marks below are the 2026 position. NHS England's Physician Specialty Recruitment Office confirmed in July 2026 that the 2027 process will be “largely unchanged”, and will publish the 2027 detail in autumn 2026.

Preparation

  • Have a structure: gather the facts, identify the competing principles, act in the patient's interest, escalate appropriately, document and reflect.
  • Know the common territory — capacity and consent, confidentiality, candour, raising concerns about a colleague, and resource pressure.
  • The area is weighted 1.2, but the communication mark it sits under is weighted 1.6.

Top Tips

  • Do not rush to a verdict. The panel is marking how you reason, not whether you land on their answer.
  • Say explicitly when you would seek senior help — that is a strength, not a weakness.
  • Acknowledge the human side before the procedural one.
